Time Zone

All of Jalisco (the State Puerto Vallarta is in) is in Central Time Zone.

 

Money Exchange

Do not use a street money exchange – they have the worst rates. Go to a Bank for the best rates. ATMs at major banks should be safe (Banorte, ScotiaBank, Intercam, etc).  Intercam (Ignacio L. Vallarta 130) provides services via their ATM or tellers for account holders and non.

Common Sense

Just as you do at home, be aware of your surroundings.  While Puerto Vallarta is normally quite safe, it is not crime free (like anywhere). Don’t flash your money or electronics or jewelry, especially late at night, alone. 

 

Puerto Vallarta is a polite and friendly place, however, like most places, drunk and belligerent behavior is not desired or tolerated. 

 

Remaining friendly and polite will go a long way, even with the language barrier – and a smile always helps.

 

Drinking and Driving

Hopefully, this is obvious, but DON’T!  The consequences here are severe.  Uber and Taxis are plentiful and affordable – use them.

 

Legal System / Issues

Just like back home, ignorance of the law is not an excuse here.  In Mexico, your guilt is largely presumed, until proven innocence (even if informally presumed). If you run into legal trouble (overall very unlikely), contact your Consulate immediately.
